Types of Melasma

Before you decide on the kit or product, check out the different melasma types

Epidermal Melasma

This melasma type is usually dark brownish with well-defined borders. It's primarily known to respond well to treatment compared to other types. Increased melanin pigment levels within the epidermis layer can trigger it.

Dermal Melasma

This melasma type appears light brownish or bluish with less-defined borders. Compared to epidermal, this is more severe and doesn't respond very well to treatment. Increased melanin levels within the dermis can trigger it.

Mixed Melasma

Amongst the three, this is the commonest. It is a combination of both melasma with mixed borders. It appears as both brownish and bluish patches. Luckily, it responds to the treatment significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Please look at some of our clients' most commonly asked questions. If you don't find your answers, kindly contact us.

Question 1: What are the main causes of melasma?

Answer: Currently, the causes are not fully clear. However, some factors, such as sun UV exposure, exposure and genetics, may trigger the occurrence.

Furthermore, hormonal changes are known to be great contributing factor to it. For example, women tend to experience melasma spots during pregnancy or birth control pills intake.

Question 2:  Is melasma painful?

Answer:  No, melasma is not painful. It's not itchy, nor does it irritate the skin in any way. The only thing it can do is affect your self-confidence over your skin.

Question 3:  Can melasma go away on its own?

Answer: Yes. It can disappear on its own, but that may take a very long time. There are cases where melasma lasted for years.

Question 4: When should I start seeing results from melasma treatment?

Answer: It depends on the melasma type, but results usually show between 7 and 14 days after starting treatment.

Question 5: Do I need a chemical peel for my melasma treatment?

Answer: This depends on the level of severity. Some melasma may prove stubborn to topical products. Hence you may need chemical peel to open up your pores and remove dead cells for easy penetration of the skincare products.

However, if you suspect high melasma severity, kindly send us a picture of your melasma or book an appointment to determine if you need melasma chemical peel.

Question 6. Can melasma treatment be permanent?

Answer: Yes. The treatment can permanently remove your melasma as long as no hormonal fluctuations can trigger its reoccurrence. In addition, apply sunblock SPF always before leaving your house each morning. You can also wear more protective clothing if you will be exposing yourself to the sun.

Question 7.  Are these products FDA-approved?

Answer. Yes, all Gold Cosmetics products are safe and FDA-approved.

Question 8. What is the difference between melasma and hyperpigmentation?

Answer: Hyperpigmentation describes an increase in melanin pigment within the skin. However, melasma is a form of hyperpigmentation.
