The other day, we had a session with one of our clients who had Melasma. At first, she was so worried if she was ever going to get her nice skin back. But then, we assured her of the possibilities if she follows our process. And guess what? She got over Melasma in Days!
Before we continue with this story, let’s briefly talk about melasma – its causes and symptoms.
What is Melasma?
Melasma is a common skin problem characterized by dark, brown, or discolored patches scattered all over the skin. It is caused by over-secretion of the cells in charge of our skin color.
Notably, melasma affects pregnant women more often, and when that happens, it’s called the “mask of pregnancy”. They usually appear as dark spots or patches around the face, nose, chin, upper lips, cheeks, forehead, as well as the forearms, neck, or back.
From experience, we noticed that Melasma lightens or darkens over time. They are worse during summer and are a bit manageable in winter.
Types of Melasma
Based on the depth of the pigment, we can classify melasma into three types. They are:
Symptoms and Causes of Melasma
Generally, melasma is caused by harsh exposure to radiation like Ultraviolet light and infrared or visible light. Hardly to say, darker-skinned individuals are at higher risk of having this condition.
Other causes of melasma include hormonal imbalance which can be triggered during pregnancy, use of contraceptive pills, or hormonal therapy. This skin condition can also be traced to increased estrogen and progesterone
On the other hand, it’s possible to develop melasma from using skincare or cosmetics products which are not suitable to your skin. Of course, we all have our allergies, so using products that trigger your allergy might lead to melasma.
Other causes of melasma include the use of sunlight-sensitive drugs known as phototoxic drugs, genetic factors, and hypothyroidism – a situation where your thyroid is underactive. Some anti-seizure drugs can also cause melasma.
