The Ultimate Guide To Mixing and Layering Skincare Ingredients
Assuming you are one of those who have decided to take your skincare routine to another level instead of the regular cleansing, and moisturizing but have no idea how to do it. Then, you’ve stumbled into the right page.
Welcome to the next level of skincare!
Before getting started, please note that mixing skincare ingredients without having a proper idea of how they work or interact with each other may be detrimental to your skin. Another point is to understand your skin type and allergies. That is why we recommend seeking the assistance of a licensed esthetician or skincare professional before embarking on this journey.
Lastly, learn to pay attention to your product’s ingredients. To help, in this article, we have created a simple guide that outlines what goes and doesn’t go for some of the popular skincare ingredients you know and our product picks on each.
Now, let’s take a look!
Vitamin C
Of course, if you are following us, you’ll understand by now that this is one of our favorite skincare ingredients. It’s unique because of its anti-aging and antioxidant abilities to protect the skin from free radicals and encourage healthier skin with a reinforced barrier.
In terms of mixing, one of the best combos is Vitamin C with Hyaluronic Acid. The acid is a good humectant for retaining moisture from the air and the skincare. It also moisturizes and hydrates for plumped appearance, whereas vitamin C brightens and boosts collagen. You can also add Aloe Vera to soothe and calm sensitive skin.
Meanwhile, combining vitamin C with niacinamide or retinol isn’t such a great idea because they tend to lower the effectiveness of each other. Although separately, these ingredients can significantly improve the skin. Please note that niacinamide can be combined with most other ingredients except vitamin C.
Retinol
Aside from vitamin C, retinol is another skincare ingredient that is highly regarded by many. While some see it as a great source of vitamin A, we call it the holy grail for anti-aging because of its ability to smooth fine lines, fade dark spots and improve rough skin texture.
For a good result, you may combine retinol with moisturizing ingredients, like our popular Azulene Moisturizer, Hyaluronic Acid, Carrot Moisturizer and SPF. While retinol benefits the skin, it can also make it sensitive to the sun. Hence, the need for SPF.
However, avoid mixing retinol-rich products with Vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide and exfoliant acids like alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) and beta hydroxy acid (BHA). These exfoliants can dry the skin and trigger irritation if your routine already contains retinol. Although, AHA and BHA can go with moisturizing ingredients and SPF. Benzoyl Peroxide
This is a fantastic formula for people with acne-prone skin that shouldn’t be missed in your skincare routine. Since it’s a drying ingredient, it should be used judiciously and with a gentle hydrating ingredient and possibly topical antibiotics.
However, avoiding combining benzoyl peroxide with retinol and tretinoin is necessary. If you are already under acne treatment, treat this ingredient cautiously, as both can cause skin dryness. Another point is to avoid using benzoyl peroxide with hydroquinone, as it can trigger bleaching with marks on the skin.
SPF
In skin care, this is one of the most compulsory part of any routine. It’s an important way to protect the skin from environmental aggressors like sun & UV rays which are known to trigger premature aging of the skin or even cancer. Apply once you are done with other products.
Don’t mix your sunscreen with makeup to prevent tampering with the protective factors. Only apply as a single layer. You can check our wide varieties of sunblock depending on your skin color. You may also check out Green Tea & Mineral Cream which contains green tree extract necessary for boosting the antioxidant power of sunscreen.
