Everything You Should Know About Pigmentation
Recently, we have noticed questions on if there's any real difference between "pigmentation" & "hyperpigmentation". Well, that's why we are here.
Here's the deal!
Pigmentation simply means the coloring or discoloration of the skin due to changes in melanin. However, melanin is the pigment responsible for varying shades and skin color. People with lower amounts of melanin usually have fair skin tones, while individuals with higher melanin deposits have dark skin tones.
However, abnormal changes in melanin production within an individual can lead to different types of pigmentation. Such as "hyperpigmentation" which causes dark skin tone & "hypopigmentation" which is likened to light spots or loss of skin color.
The article's primary focus is hyperpigmentation, the formation of dark skin tone or color around some body regions. What causes these dark pigments, and how can they be treated?
Join us in this article, and let's learn more!
What Is Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition that turns certain body areas darker than others. It's usually caused by excessive production of melanin pigment.
Aside from darkening particular areas of the body, it can also occur as small patches or appear as brown, gray, pink or red spots throughout the skin. These spots are sometimes called age spots, liver spots or sun spots.
Hyperpigmentation can appear throughout the entire body or particular areas, for instance, the underarm, knees, elbow, neck, back or buttocks.
Notwithstanding, it's important to note that skin around the above-mentioned parts contains higher concentrations of melanocytes. The cells that produce the melanin pigments within the melanosomes.
Types of Hyperpigmentation
There are different types, but we have highlighted the commonest ones. Now, let's take a brief look.
Also known as solar lentigines or liver spots, these are spots that appear on the skin in the long run due to excessive sun exposure. Typically, they mainly occur in areas of the body that are generally exposed to the sun.
This skin problem results from hormonal changes and is usually common during pregnancy in women. They may appear around the stomach, face or any other part of the body.
This is common and typically appears in response to injury or inflammation previously sustained by the skin, such as inflammation or damage due to acne, burns or harsh clinical treatments like chemical peels.
Freckles are a form of hyperpigmentation which usually depends on genetics. It appears as tiny dots after extended exposure to sun rays. This particular condition is prevalent among people with fairer skin complexion.
Causes of Hyperpigmentation
As previously stated, increased melanin production is one of the causes of hyperpigmentation. So excessive production of these pigments in certain areas will cause darkened complexion. Also, note that melanin is produced by skin cells called melanocytes.
Furthermore, changes in hormonal levels during pregnancy, puberty or older age can trigger excessive melanin production. When this happens, the skin appears darker.
Certain medications such as birth control pills, chemotherapy and other light-sensitive drugs can trigger darkened skin complexion. On the other side, extended sun exposure can also trigger hyperpigmentation.
Other causes include Addison's disease, a rare endocrine disease generally affecting mostly sun-exposed body parts and fractionated exposed parts. Such as the face, neck, hands, elbow, and knees. Also added to the list of causes are thyroid disorders, injuries, burns, cuts, and so much more.
